Mistake #2: Engaging with Unofficial "Guides" and Hustlers
As soon as you approach the ticketing area, and throughout the complex, you will be approached by men offering to show you "the secret tomb," demanding to check your ticket, or thrusting "free" gifts into your hands.
- The Result: If you stop to argue, or politely accept a "gift," you will quickly find yourself surrounded and aggressively pressured for a tip (baksheesh). It is intimidating and ruins the atmosphere.
- The Fix: Do not make eye contact, do not break your stride, and firmly say "La Shukran" (No thank you). Better yet, visit with a licensed Egyptologist guide. The hustlers know who the official guides are and will generally leave you completely alone when they see you are accompanied by a professional.
Mistake #3: Booking a Random Camel or Horse Ride on the Spot
Taking a camel or horseback ride into the desert for a panoramic photo of the Pyramids is iconic. But booking one on the fly inside the complex is a gamble.
- The Result: You will likely overpay drastically, the ride might be cut short, or you might find yourself in a heated argument over the agreed-upon price once you are out in the desert. Furthermore, the welfare of some animals owned by random vendors is questionable.
